Armada’s Lord Chancellor and Sift’s Peanut Butter Cookie Sandwich
Beer: The Lord Chancellor, one of the many beers put out by Armada brewing, is a 7% oatmeal stout. A mild mannered beer that holds a wollup of flavor and interest. It is almost in the porter category with its light mouthfeel, but it has a wonderfully malty aroma and it pours a super dark black color. An interesting development is that my palette for stouts is really evolving. I started being into sweet pastry stouts but I have grown to enjoy the drier guys. This one has a mild sweetness but nothing too big, mostly malty with some nice coffee and a very subtle chocolate. Overall a really great Stout.
Cookie: This is one of the gems I grabbed at Sift Bake Shop on a recent visit. It is two peanut butter cookies, but with a lot of the character of an oatmeal cookie. The best part is the great crispy crunch exterior with a little bit of chewy interior. If I used the word perfect to describe the cookie you might think I was exaggerating until you had one.
This is actually two perfect cookies sandwiching a yummy light peanut butter frosting filling. The filling was almost buttercreamish, not totally sure but it was light and creamy and sweetly peanut buttery. The crunch, the soft, the frosting - it’s all a majestic explosion.
Pairing: I had this pairing at the Beeracks sitting at the bar tasting some beers and chatting with some strangers. The experience was really nice. I was thinking the peanut butter cookie would be paired with a PB stout of some kind but this malty English oatmeal stout was really great. The peanut butter and sweetness made the malty and coffee notes in the beer pop.
