Nod Hill’s Grandfather Twilight and Oreos
Nod Hill is one of my favorite breweries. It is the first place where we shared a beer and cookie with a stranger, to great success. The taproom is awesome and the beer is always on point. We were lucky enough to get a bottle of some limited bourbon barrel aged Imperial stout from Dave. Considering my favorite beer from Nod Hill last time was another imperial stout, Contrapasso, (which we paired with a chocolate covered Oreo) I was pretty pumped to crack open this beautiful bottle.
The Beer: Twilight Grandfather is big 11% Imperial stout that was aged in burnout barrels. It is sweet and malty and boozy and thick and toasty with a little bitter bite.
The Cookie: We considered some drop cookie options or even a sugar cookie for this beer. However, after sipping it, Oreos were the perfect fit. We all know Oreos. My favorite thing about Oreos is their perfect texture balance. A healthy crunch with a soft middle. It really is perfect when the cookie is saturated from a dunk.
The Pairing: This beer pairing led to one of the best beer dunks in our beer and cookie experience. The bourbon boozy notes and the chocolate cookie were brilliant. The soft cream lingered and made for such an awesome flavor experience. The beer is slightly sweet and the malt profile is big and complex which makes it a wonderful partner for a choclately cookie.
