Black Hog’s Lager and My Sister’s Chocolate Lemon Flowers

Black Hog’s Lager and My Sister’s Chocolate Lemon Flowers

My sister isn’t the most accomplished baker, she once made sugar cookies and forgot the SUGAR. Those cookies were like crumbly cardboard. This time around though, she knocked it out of the park, butI think it is because her 9 year old son was there to make sure she added the sugar.

The Beer: Black hog brewing has established themselves as a quality producer of consistent delicious beers, and their Lager is no exception. Crisp delicious german style beer. Lots of malt backbone with a little bite of hops and bitter that balance it well. This is a super drinkable beer that is pleasant in an endless number of situations. I think pilsners and lagers are a big indicator of the level of quality for the rest of a brewing operation. If a brewery has a high quality lager, the rest often follows. Black hog is rocking this beer and that excites me for visiting their taproom, ASAP.

The Cookie:  Alright, these flower shaped treats aren’t technically cookies, but I’m ok with that. They are a little flakey pie crust filled with a lemon custard and topped with milk chocolate. The result is ridiculous. Chocolate lemon pie is one of my favorite desserts. Important to note: lemon desserts is something John and I always agree on. These guys are particularly good because they are bite sized and have a nice balance of crust to filling ratio.

The Pairing: Mini pies are naturally suited to be partnered with beer. They are sweet and crusty, the flower petals were crisp and flaky and made for great fodder to be washed away with the lager. The lager’s mild bitter balanced well with the lemon filling. The chocolate lingers and ties it all together to remind you of the desert status of the experience you're having. The light slightly crisp beer was perfect for the light crust and even lighter tasting filing. You can’t ask for much more than this.
